SSI Team
Path
Sierra was founded with a goal of bringing high-resolution pressure imaging to the medical community for the diagnosis of motility disorders within the GI tract. Starting in 1999, a group of leading scientists and engineers was formed that included Dr’s Ray Clouse in clinical application; Sergiy Kanilo in image processing software; and Jae Son, Bill Peine, and Tom Parks in sensor systems, instrumentation, and product development. The team received exceptionally high scientific review scores in its applications for a series of Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The resulting awards provided the R&D funding that enabled development of the ManoScan 360™ system.

Within 2 years of grant award, the world’s first high-resolution pressure images of the full esophagus were obtained. These revealed an unprecedented view of physiology within the GI tract and demonstrated the significant improvements in simplicity of use and diagnostic accuracy that the ManoScan technologies enable. In 2003, ManoScan received FDA approval and in 2004, SSI began its first commercial shipments of the device. Since that time, with the leadership of Messrs. Jim Pittman in Sales and Marketing and Eric Finkelman in Operations, SSI has produced and installed hundreds of ManoScan systems world-wide and supported tens of thousands of clinical procedures.

While commercial activities continue to expand, Sierra has maintained its R&D focus, having received additional NIH funding in 2004 for development of the next-generation technology, High-Definition Manometry, that resolves both circumferential and axial manometric distributions. This system provides detailed 3-D pressure images and videos of the organ under study. These striking images and associated data are providing new insights into the physiology and pathophysiology of the upper and lower esophageal sphincter regions and the anorectum.

Equally significant has been Sierras commitment to developing new products relating to diagnostic supplies and pH and Impedance based reflux monitoring systems. SSI has established itself as the technology leader within this industry having introduced numerous innovations such as disposable sanitary catheter sheaths, high-resolution anorectal manometry systems, wireless reflux monitoring systems, reflux contour visualization programs, and a variety of other products and supplies.

As we work toward the future, SSI will maintain it’s focus on providing a suite of diagnostic products that set the standard in simplicity of use, accuracy, and completeness.
